Review: (I got) dish’d

Where did it all begin? dish’d was conceived by a small dedicated group of food enthusiasts within Simplot Australia back in 2011. The goal was to create a new and exciting way for people to experience innovative and delicious food from around the world. Easily.

I had to catch the bus to the shops to pick up my Fitbit Charge and one of the ads in the bus was for dish’d.  I usually find myself attracted to food.  And dish’d had an introductory offer of $30 off the first purchase over $50.  So I decided to give it a go.

Ordering and delivery was easy peasy.

I ordered approx $150 worth of food (bill came to $120 because of the offer).

The food came in two polystyrene boxes packed with dried ice.  You’re warned not to touch or hold the dry ice but of course, I only read the warning after I picked it up and held it in between my fingers.

Verdict?

Delicious and inexpensive.  Here are the few things I ordered and what Gambit and I thought note that Gambit is slightly fussier and needs a larger portion size than me, so his comments may reflect that:

1PRAWN AND CRAB MEZZELUNE WITH DURUM WHEAT SEMOLINA AND WHOLE EGG PASTA Unfortunately the mezzelune came out mushy.  Maybe I overcooked it but besides mush, it didn’t taste like seafood.
2BASIL & PINE NUT MEDAGLIONI WITH DURUM WHEAT SEMOLINA AND WHOLE EGG PASTA Again, not sure about the pasta, it was mushy.  However the flavour of this dish was lovely.
3THAI VEGETABLE GREEN CURRY WITH JASMINE RICE, THAI EGGPLANT, POTATO AND KAFFIR LIME LEAVES I loved this dish.The flavour was delicious and it was very easy to heat up in the microwave.
4VEGETABLE LASAGNEWITH WHOLE EGG PASTA, BÉCHAMEL AND GRANA PADANO CHEESE Gambit had this dish and he said it was pretty good but he needed to maybe eat two.
5PEARL COUSCOUS SALAD WITH CAPSICUM, CHICK PEAS, EDAMAME AND OLIVES IN A SHERRY VINEGAR AND DIJON MUSTARD DRESSING To be reviewed.
6WHITE AND RED QUINOA SALAD WITH SWEET POTATO AND ZUCCHINI IN A DRESSING OF EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL AND LEMON JUICE To be reviewed.
7VEGETARIAN MOUSSAKA LAYERED WITH POTATO, EGGPLANT, ZUCCHINI AND MUSHROOMS This dish was OK.  It was a little saltier than I would have liked.
8PORCINI MUSHROOM AND BLACK TRUFFLE PAPPARDELLEWITH DURUM WHEAT SEMOLINA AND WHOLE EGG PASTA I loved the shape of the pappardelle.  The smell was divine and the taste was pretty good.
9THAI PRAWN RED CURRYWITH JASMINE RICE, PRAWNS, BABY CORN AND KAFFIR LIME LEAVES One of my favourite dishes.  The flavour was excellent and the portion size was spot on for me.
10CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT CRÈME PAPPARDELLE Definitely looked a lot better in the photo than how it tasted.  I couldn’t taste the chocolate so it was just like eating a dish of pasta.
11HAKE EN PAPILLOTE WITH GRILLED ZUCCHINI, CHERRY TOMATOES AND PESTO SAUCE I think they must do fish the best as all the fish dishes are exceptional.This one had a lovely flavour with the pesto.
12PRAWNS EN PAPILLOTE WITH ZUCCHINI, CARROTS AND EDAMAME BEANS WITH LEMON CRÈME Gambit had this dish and again, said the flavour was excellent but a bit too small of a portion for him.
13COD EN PAPILLOTE WITH JULIENNE CARROTS, FENNEL AND ALMONDS IN A CITRUS SAUCE The en papillote, whatever that was, was really delicious.  Again, the fish was perfect.
14SEA BASS WITH BULGARIN AN EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, LEMON AND DILL SAUCE I really liked the bulgar, something I don’t cook myself.  The fish texture was not compromised with it being frozen.
15SEA BASS WITH SPINACHIN A TOMATO, EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL AND PARSLEY SAUCE Gambit had this one as he likes spinach.  He said it was excellent, but again, too small of a portion.
16SEA BASS WITH PEARL COUS COUSIN A TOMATO, EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL AND PARSLEY SAUCE I enjoyed this dish because I don’t usually make pearl cous cous.  Again, I enjoyed this whole dish a lot.
17SEA BREAM WITH VEGETABLESIN AN EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, LEMON AND MUSTARD SAUCE This was one of the first dishes I tried and the flavour was excellent, despite how simple this dish is.
18PARMIGIANO REGGIANO® CHEESE PERLINEWITH DURUM WHEAT SEMOLINA AND WHOLE EGG PASTA This was the best pasta dish I bought.  I served it with some tomato and onion sauce.  The texture of the pasta was lovely.
19ZUPPA ORTOLANAWITH VEGETABLES AND CEREALS This soup was OK.  I had to make it twice to make sure I didn’t do it wrong the first time. The flavour is quite subtle but it did make me feel healthy eating it.
20ZUPPA CONTADINAWITH VEGETABLES, CEREALS AND LEGUMES to be reviewed.

 

Overall, I would definitely repurchase, if I was going to be around in Sydney, but I am already thinking of ordering it for my foodie friends as a present.  I’d say give it a go before the intro offer runs out.

It’s the BEST frozen meals I’ve had, especially the fish ones.
