It was my birthday on Wednesday and Gambit worked overtime on a public holiday so he could get the day off and spend it with me.
I must admit I must be one of the lucky ones to have one of the most best husbands in the world as I didn’t have to lift a finger throughout the whole day and he had planned everything. I didn’t know anything we were doing so everything was a surprise.
After a bit of a lie in we made our way out into the cold at about 8:30am.
Gambit had done his research and found a nice little cafe close by called Penelope which was excellent, and obvious others thought so too as it was packed.
I had the Pumpkin Waffles and Gambit had the Penny Egg Sandwich on an English Muffin. My waffles were excellent. I had never had pumpkin waffles before and they were really light and fluffy and gorgeous to eat! They were served with appled butter, pecans, warmed cinnamon apples and dried cranberries.
Gambit had timed it that after we finished at breakfast we could go straight to my second surprise – to the cinema to watch Kingsman: The Secret Service. I loved the movie for many reasons. Any Colin Firth film is an instant favourite of mine, and there are a few scenes which were really fantastic. I won’t go into them here as I don’t want to add any spoilers.
We popped into a coffee shop before making our way home where I was greeted with a bouquet of flowers which my Aunt (from Canberra) had organised for me and my third surprise from Gambit, a Haagen-Dazs icecream cake! It had a layer of chocolate on top and then cookies and cream on the bottom decorated with wafers and Oreos. I love icecream and when it forms a shape of a cake I get even more excited!
We rested for a few hours at home before bundling up again to my fourth surprise – dinner at Blue Smoke. Following our visit to Mighty Quinns we developed a further love for ribs and brisket and Blue Smoke didn’t disappoint. I would say it was equal to Mighty Quinn’s! We ordered the brisket and short ribs, a side of brussels sprouts slaw and home fries. There was so much meat that we actually didn’t finish it all, despite Gambit’s attempt.
Lastly, my fifth surprise was a little further Uptown to a little theatre off Broadway. It was a musical I wanted to see for a while but never got around to – Avenue Q! I am sure most people have seen or heard of this by now! And it really is a fab little musical!
So that all pretty much sums up my first New York birthday spent with my lovely husband, who spoilt me rotten.
