I had no intention of going to Carlo’s Bakery because I actually didn’t know it existed. I stumbled across it the day I walked home from sitting the 5 hour pre-licencing course. Carlo’s Bakery is situated at 625 8th Avenue at 42nd St, near Time Square.
I have since found out that there are nine locations in total.
I decided to pop in and see what the fuss was and immediately upon entering I saw that you needed to grab a ticket and then wait for your number to be called.
I didn’t grab a ticket when I entered as I had no intention of buying anything that day since I was on my way to the grocery store to pick up extra items to make lasagna for Gambit. But as I stood there and watched everyone queue, I decided that it was probably one of the quieter days (compared to a weekend) and I didn’t want to have to come back and wait in a longer queue.
What I found bizarre was that I had to queue for my ticket to order but then I had to queue again to pay. The line to pay was being serviced by only one girl so it took twice as long. In total, I waited for about 45 minutes. And like I said, that day seemed to be a quieter time.
I ordered a plain cheesecake to continue with the best cheesecake hunt.
The girl said they offered complimentary wording iced on the top so I thought for fun I would get ‘Happy Eating’ piped on the top.
While I was waiting I decided to invite one of Gambit’s colleagues over to dinner that night, to help share the load of calories.
The cheesecake was more expensive than the others so far, and I thought was just OK.
Of course, Gambit having nearly opposite tastes to me (apparently opposites attract?) said it was the best cheesecake so far.
Run down: the cheesecake was light and not that heavy, rich creamy type I like. And it again had the sponge cake type base (honestly, what is going on here in this city???)
I would not return to Carlo’s for cheesecake, but I have been told that my next visit should include the Lobster Tail and cannoli.
